Host Tarek welcomed special returning guest Ian O’Dwyer, Co-Founder of Feel SOMA and a pioneer in movement, manual therapy, and emotional integration. The two engaged in a conversation about the importance of fascia, fluid flow, and a more intuitive, human-centred approach to health, movement, and recovery.
Through a candid and thought-provoking discussion, Ian and Tarek examine the living tissue we often ignore. Far from being passive wrapping, fascia is intelligent, responsive, and deeply connected to our physical and emotional states. Through years of practical experience and client observation, Ian argues that fascia thrives on variability, play, and multidimensional movement. When we give the body permission to move freely, not just within rigid protocols, it responds with better circulation, reduced pain, and clearer thinking.
The episode strips back the gloss often found in wellness trends. Ian warns against blindly copying athlete routines from social media, like cold plunges and contrast therapy, without understanding your own nervous system’s needs. For some, a cold plunge could regulate the system; for others, it could inflame and overwhelm. Women, in particular, may experience hormonal disruption if exposed to temperatures below 9–12°C. It’s not about what’s trendy. It’s about what your body can tolerate, enjoy, and respond to positively.
Central to Ian’s philosophy is the need to treat the person, not just the body. Pain is never just physical. Fascia and bone store emotion. If someone is emotionally overloaded or neurologically exhausted, asking them to perform a fixed exercise routine or pushing them through discomfort may backfire. Instead, Ian suggests that movement should feel safe, freeing, and even fun. Play isn’t childish. It’s medicinal.
Tarek and Ian also touch on the broken nature of “doing to” clients rather than working with them. They call for a more inclusive, curious, and choice-driven model of coaching, one that invites people to notice how they feel, make decisions based on sensation, and respect the deep intelligence of the human system.
Whether you’re a practitioner, coach, or just trying to feel better in your body, this conversation offers grounded insights into the rhythms of tissue, the weight of stress, and the possibility of moving through life with less restriction and more connection.
