Beyond Prescription: Understanding GLP-1 Treatments with Jennifer Halsall & Dr Lou Atkinson from The Collective

Host Tarek welcomed special guests Jennifer Halsall and Dr Lou Atkinson, leaders at The Collective, a team focused on redefining health through inclusion, compassion, and evidence-led approaches. Together, they unpack the shifting landscape of health, fitness, and identity through the lens of GLP-1 treatments.

At the heart of the episode is a message that’s as human as it is urgent: the rise in GLP-1 prescriptions like Ozempic and Wegovy isn’t just a pharmaceutical trend – it’s a cultural turning point. For many, these treatments mark the first time in years they’re able to move without pain, engage without shame, or even consider stepping into a gym. But this isn’t a silver bullet. As Jennifer and Lou explain, physical activity isn’t optional – it’s essential. Without it, the risk of muscle loss, instability, and missed opportunity for whole-person health skyrockets.

But here’s the catch: many of those starting GLP-1s feel unwelcome in the very spaces that are meant to support them. Gym intimidation, shame around movement, and the baggage of past failures create barriers taller than any treadmill incline. That’s where The Collective comes in – advocating for a model of care that doesn’t just tolerate this new wave of clients, but actively designs for them. It’s about beginner-friendly programmes, coaches who know when to speak and when to simply listen, and facilities that stop centring thinness as the goal.

Jennifer shares moving insight from GLP-1 users, whose renewed willingness to care for their bodies came only after their self-worth began to re-emerge. Lou urges professionals to get curious, to trial and test new programmes with integrity, and to gather real-world data that the big trials aren’t capturing. Their call is bold yet grounded: don’t label people by their medication. See them. Support them. Walk beside them.

This isn’t about shortcuts. It’s about reshaping systems so people have the strength – inside and out – to keep going. Whether you’re a health professional, coach, gym owner, or someone curious about what these treatments mean for real lives, this episode offers a powerful reframe.

Listen now and ask yourself: how can we make movement a homecoming, not a hurdle?
