Host Tarek Michael-Chouja welcomed special guest Dave Liow, founder of the Holistic Movement Coach Programme. The two engaged in a raw and honest conversation about the importance of viewing the body as an interconnected system, not just through muscles and joints, but through emotion, history and nervous system health.

For Dave Liow, weakness isn’t just about poor muscle strength. It’s about disconnection. A muscle that doesn’t “fire” isn’t lazy, it’s lost its place in the chain. In this episode, Dave challenges the idea that tightness is always the culprit and offers a different lens, one where tightness is often a compensation, a red flag, or a sign the body doesn’t feel safe.

Dave shares how his background in academia and sport science was shaken when he first encountered kinesiology, meridians and energy work. It didn’t fit the textbooks, but it worked. What followed was a personal and professional transformation, a shift from certainty to curiosity, from rigidity to integration. With humility and grit, he describes how he pieced together the Activate Mobility Method, merging clinical muscle testing with Chinese medicine, sensory feedback, fascia work and emotional awareness.

Tarek and Dave explore what it means to work with clients in a way that prioritises meaning, not just movement. They talk about the emotional root of dysfunction, the dangers of ignoring the psychological layers of pain, and how inflammation, whether from trauma, stress or overtraining, can block the neuromuscular connection.

Dave also offers practical takeaways, how to self-assess your range of motion, what to look for as “lights on the dashboard,” and how a simple spiky ball can become a tool for sensory activation, waking up underused stabilisers and rewiring awareness. But the real emphasis is don’t rush to fix. First, listen.

This conversation goes beyond biomechanics. It’s about trust, trusting your body, your instincts, your client and the process. It’s about choosing control over rigidity, connection over correction, and asking deeper questions about what the body is truly trying to say.

If you’ve ever felt stuck in your body, in pain with no clear reason, or burnt out from overtraining, this episode will challenge the way you think about movement, not as something you “do” to your body, but something you re-learn to feel from the inside out.
