From Player to Leader: Insights from Fiji Rugby’s Alana Thomas on Leadership and Culture

Co-hosts Jay Hedley and Tarek Michael-Chouja welcomed special guest Alana Thomas, High-Performance Manager at Fiji Rugby. The two engaged in a conversation about the importance of leading multicultural sports teams and developing elite performance through culture, connection, and leadership.

In this episode of Purpose Driven Movement, Alana Thomas takes listeners through her journey from professional rugby player to high-performance manager. She emphasizes that leadership in elite sports is as much about people as it is about performance. For teams composed of athletes from diverse cultural backgrounds, understanding and respecting each culture is fundamental. Alana shares how celebrating traditions, learning about hierarchical dynamics, and engaging in meaningful connection creates a strong foundation for high-performing teams.

The conversation highlights a shift from control to influence as a core leadership principle. Alana explains that trying to dictate every outcome often leads to frustration, especially in multicultural environments. Instead, she advocates for using empathy, building trusted relationships, and leaning on mentors to navigate challenges. This approach allows leaders to guide their teams effectively while fostering an environment where players and staff can thrive.

Consistency and adaptability are also central to elite sports leadership. Alana reflects on her experience managing Fiji Rugby, where planning, messaging, and daily routines were maintained even amidst organizational changes. She stresses that while paths may shift due to external factors, keeping the team aligned with clear goals ensures long-term performance. Adaptability doesn’t mean abandoning strategy; it means being flexible in approach while staying true to core objectives.

Alana also dives into the importance of support systems beyond the players. She notes that coaches and support staff require guidance, mentorship, and care just as much as athletes. By addressing the wellbeing of everyone in the ecosystem, leaders create environments that sustain excellence.

Listeners will gain actionable strategies on leveraging cultural intelligence, balancing empathy with accountability, and building consistent, adaptable systems to drive performance. Alana’s insights provide a roadmap not only for athletes and coaches but for any leader aiming to elevate team dynamics and outcomes.

Tune in to this episode of Purpose Driven Movement to explore how elite sports leaders cultivate connection, culture, and consistency to achieve extraordinary results.
