Breathwork, Movement, and the Future of Therapy with Tom Williams

In this fascinating episode, host Vanessa sits down with Tom Williams, a skilled physiotherapist and breathwork expert, to talk about how integrating breathing exercises can support the body and mind. Tom shares his journey into using breathwork as a tool for healing, explaining how it can complement traditional physiotherapy and why it’s an easy, cost-free addition to anyone’s health regimen.

Tom reveals the potential of breathwork to not only help with stress management and anxiety but also improve physical performance. He discusses how simple breathing techniques can have profound effects on posture, muscle tension, and recovery. But it’s not all about mechanics. Tom dives into the emotional and spiritual dimensions of breathwork, exploring how it can foster self-awareness, build trust between therapist and patient, and transform the experience of therapy itself.

Throughout the conversation, Tom and Vanessa tackle the challenges of bringing breathwork into the physiotherapy profession, from scepticism about its effectiveness to concerns about professionalising the practice. But they both agree on one thing: despite the resistance, breathwork is here to stay. Tom makes it clear that the integration of breathwork in therapy has to be gradual, but the results speak for themselves.

Tom also shares his experience using tools like the Oxide Band, a wearable that tracks heart rate variability and breathing patterns, helping practitioners and patients visualise the changes breathwork can bring. It’s not just about the practice, it’s about the data that proves its worth.

This episode is a must-listen for anyone curious about the future of therapy, particularly those in movement or wellness fields. Breathwork isn’t just a trend, it’s becoming a powerful ally in the hands of those who understand its potential.
