Host Vanessa welcomed special guest Jessica Maguire, an expert in neuroscience, neuroplasticity, and vagus nerve stimulation. The two engaged in a conversation about the importance of understanding and regulating the nervous system for overall well-being.
The discussion began with the significance of becoming aware of our nervous system patterns. The nervous system, influenced by past experiences, can actively learn and adapt through new experiences. This adaptability means we can play a crucial role in shaping how our nervous system responds to future events.
The conversation dives into the interplay between the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems. Balancing these systems is essential for maintaining a state of calm and readiness. While sympathetic activation is necessary for energy and alertness, it is crucial to maintain a connection with the ventral vagal system to feel safe and socially engaged.
The role of movement in nervous system regulation was also emphasised. Exercise should not merely be about reshaping the body from an external perspective but should be viewed as a powerful tool for the nervous and immune systems. It was suggested that individuals might need to rethink their approach to exercise, focusing on what brings them joy and connection, which supports the social engagement system.
Challenges of persistent pain and the importance of considering the biopsychosocial model were also discussed. Psychological and social factors, alongside biological ones, contribute to the experience of pain. Trainers and clinicians are encouraged to explore what was happening in a person’s life when their pain began, as stress and other factors can significantly impact their condition.
The conversation also touched on the importance of gut health, sleep, and the immune system in maintaining nervous system health. Simple questions about a person’s sleep patterns, gut health, and immune function can provide valuable insights into their overall well-being.
Vanessa shared anecdotes about clients who had experienced significant challenges with pain and injury. She highlighted the role of personal trainers and coaches as co-regulators, helping clients feel more regulated through their interactions. It was noted that clinicians and coaches could serve as nerve centres, with their state of regulation influencing their clients.
Listeners were encouraged to become scientists of their own nervous systems. Developing awareness and understanding that our brain and body are not just passive receivers of information but active learners is key. By recognising and shaping our nervous system patterns, we can better prepare for future challenges and enhance our overall well-being.
This insightful conversation underscored the importance of understanding and regulating our nervous system to improve health and resilience. By paying attention to our patterns and making conscious changes, we can positively influence our well-being and navigate life’s challenges more effectively.
