A towel, a band and plenty of ways to challenge the grip.

The towel creates a flexible alternative to machine-based techniques of gripping. The band adds tension and pulls the body towards the anchor, encouraging more of the trunk stabilisers to kick in as the resistance increases.

Start with a manageable resistance, involve the fingers and thumbs and control the return. Then change the towel thickness, distance or pulling angle and see what happens.

Our episode with John Dams gave us plenty to unpack. One simple coaching situation shows how shared direction, personal meaning and practical application can meet in the same moment.

An athlete receives a low recovery score before training.

The coach may see a reason to adjust the workload. The athlete may experience the same result as a judgment about their preparation or readiness.

John’s words give the situation a wider team context: “The best teams are the teams that have a shared understanding of where they’re going.”

If the athlete understands the longer-term direction, an adjusted session may feel like part of the plan rather than a step backwards.

Jay Hedley brings attention to the athlete’s interpretation: “Meaning drives performance, and you perform your meanings.”

Tarek Michael-Chouja then connects meaning with application: “If people don’t make meaning or sense of it, they’re not going to value it. And if they don’t value it, they dismiss it.”

A low recovery score can land differently with each athlete. One may see useful information, while another may interpret it as a sign they are falling behind. A coaching conversation can give the score context, explain why the session may change and help the athlete focus on what comes next.

Chalk or gloves? Try both and see what happens when the bell starts moving.

Chalk can help with moisture and the “stickability” of the object while keeping the hand directly connected to the handle. Chalking the hands may also allow the athlete to maintain a clearer kinaesthetic feel for the handle or object. Gloves may provide more protection, but a glove that shifts or bunches during a clean can change the grip and timing.

Start light and pay attention to the grip. Does the glove stay in place? Can the athlete feel the handle rotate? Are they over-gripping?

Choose the option that feels secure and supports consistent control.
