Paul shares the experience that reshaped his approach to fitness, reflects on training intensity and describes people finding movement through everyday activities and community. They also discuss prolonged sitting and why a scheduled workout may tell only part of someone’s activity story.

Part 18 of our illustration series explores lumbo-pelvic rhythm: how the lumbar spine and pelvis coordinate during a forward bend and return to standing.

As you bend, the pelvis rotates forwards relative to the thighs and the lumbar spine flexes. Both contribute to moving the trunk forwards. Hip and lumbar extension contribute to the return.

For coaches, the point is to observe where the movement comes from. Watch the pelvis and lower-back curve throughout the repetition, rather than judging the movement only by how far the person reaches.

Someone may use a different combination of hip and lumbar movement on the way up than on the way down.
